Tate's been quite busy with interviews that he has been doing in conjunction with the Remember Me DVD release. And that is good for us! In this interview, he talked to Christina Radish of iebs.net via telephone.



Tate Ellington Talks Remember Me

Now out on DVD, Remember Me is an unforgettable story about the power of love, the strength of family, and the importance of living passionately and treasuring every day of one’s life.

Tyler (Robert Pattinson) is a rebellious young man in New York City, who has had a strained relationship with his father ever since tragedy separated their family. At the encouragement of his best friend, Aidan (Tate Ellington), Tyler meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin), who understands everything that he’s going through. As her spirit unexpectedly heals and inspires him, he begins to fall for her and, through their love, he begins to find happiness and meaning in his life, until the events of 9/11 change their lives forever.

During a recent exclusive phone interview with IESB, actor Tate Ellington spoke about playing Rob Pattinson’s best friend, identifying with his character and the behind the scenes features that are included on the DVD.

IESB: How did you get into acting? Did something guide you down that path?

Tate: We didn’t really have any sort of acting thing at high school. I grew up in a town in Mississippi, and there was one theater in Jackson that was the only place to go see anything. I was originally painting. That was my thing. That’s what I still do, and that was my initial plan to go to college for. I got a scholarship for it and was supposed to be heading there. I had always wanted to try acting, and the one theater in Jackson had this summer program for two weeks, so I decided to give it a go and try it there. It turned out to be almost like a daycare. I was 17, at the time, and there was one other 16-year-old, but everybody else was eight. I felt really weird and out of place. But, the instructors ran the theater too and they asked me to audition for “The Diary of Anne Frank” for their coming season, and I did and got the job.

That was where I was sold on it. We started rehearsals and I had just never felt more at home. I was like, “This just feels right. This is exactly what I want to do.” There was one night on stage that we were doing the show, and we were already about a week in or so, and it was just some random scene that we were doing, but I just had one of those moments where I was like, “I want to do this for the rest of my life. This is what I want to do.” So, I had to turn down the art scholarship and that’s when it all started. After that, I ended up going to the University of Mississippi and tried to double major in art and theater there, but it just became too much, so I had to pick one. I knew I could always do art on my own, but I didn’t know anything about theater and wanted to learn, so that’s how it started.

Tate Ellington co-starred in this spring’s drama “Remember Me” opposite Robert Pattinson (“Twilight Saga”) and Emilie de Ravin (“Lost”). Movie Mikes had the chance to talk to Tate about his role in “Remember Me”, what it was like working with his cast and what’s in store for the future.

Mike Gencarelli: What did you first think when you were going to audition for “Remember Me”?

Tate Ellington: I wasn’t aware of what the project was at first. I didn’t know it was a studio picture. I went in and didn’t feel I was right for it at first. I said “There is no way, they are going to cast me in this”. A few days later, they told me I did well but they were going to go to LA to look more and they would let me know. I said to myself that they are never going to call again. So a month goes by and they called and said the director wants to meet you. When I met Allen (Coulter), I thought i did awful. I left the room and thought this is definitely done now. I get another call a few days later and they wanted me to meet Rob (Pattinson). I never thought originally it was going to lead to me getting the job but it ended up being great.

When you think Robert Pattinson, you think of his dark and brooding Twilight Saga character, Edward Cullen. You don’t think: ‘Hey, R-Patz could totes be the next Russell Brand.’ But guess what? According to his Remember Me co-star Tate Ellington, Rob has all the makings of a seriously hilarious stand-up comic!

“He’d be a great [comedic actor],” the star, who played Rob’s BFF Aidan Hall in the film, which is released on DVD today, June 22, told HollywoodLife.com exclusively during a phone chat June 21. “He would say these great and wonderful things that make you go ‘What?’ He would just crack you up the whole time. All the time, on set, he was always smiling. I think he’s hilarious. He could do straight-up comedy.”

Tate Ellington Honored in his Hometown

Slight Spoilers
The Madison, Mississippi Chamber of Commerce honored hometown actor Tate Ellington with a screening of Remember Me, followed by a Q and A and photo session with Tate. One of our readers, MsMaroon, attended the event and she related her story to me.

At the theater, the crowd consisted of family, friends of Tate who still lived in Madison, former teachers and people who had heard Tate talk about the film on some local radio interviews that he had done. The $20 cost bought a ticket for the film, a soda, popcorn and an opportunity to get your picture taken with Tate.

Applause rang out when Tate first appeared on screen, when he was walking with Rob trying to sell him on the S.L.U.T. Later on, at that moment, the crowd gasped and then was silent through the end.



While the credits were rolling, Kasey, the event organizer, introduced Tate to the audience. From here out, MsMaroon relates her experience at the Q and A and the signing.

He started out by giving a big thank you to the committee that held the event and to people for showing up. He said he didn't deserve it, but he was happy and overwhelmed anyway. Some of the questions ranged from, "what is like to shoot a movie," to, "how did you get your start in acting," to, "when did you decide you wanted to be an actor." He likes the difference of shooting a movie to being on stage. He had previously been in a Broadway play, "The Philanthropist" staring Matthew Broderick, and Steven Weber, and he told of one day he had accidentally pointed the gun to him self instead of at Matthew, and that in movies they, of course, would fix that and, he joked, that you wouldn't look like an idiot if you messed up something; so he liked that aspect of it.



Other questions, including mine, ranged on the topic of 9/11 and its part in the movie. He said, that overall, it sort of loomed over everything, but that the producers, director, and actors had all gotten together and had a talk of how 9/11 had just stared out as a normal for New Yorkers and all Americans. There was no lead up to it to let us the nation really know that it was coming, and so until it gets closer to time in the movie for it to take place that they didn't really want there be a lead up to it. That Tyler, Ally, Aidan, Caroline, and the others were just normal people dealing with normal everyday issues. I asked if, since a lot of some of the main actors were all foreign if they had talked about what if felt like to deal with 9/11 and it's aftermath as an American. He said that they had touched on the subject, but that you didn't really have to because it was felt all around. That a lot of the behind the scenes crew were native New Yorkers and would share their stories about the day if asked, but that the producers and Allen didn't really want so much of the movie to be focused on that one part because this wasn't a movie about 9/11. That this was a movie about Tyler, Alley, Caroline, Aidan, and the people around them. He also talked about how he wished he could live in the apartment that Tyler and Aidan lived in.



He's now living in a basement apartment in New York, and he joked about how he would ask if he could bunk in Aidan's bunk for the night, and they would tell him no.

He talked about how, the producers and director really went to bat for him about him keeping the part. They had talked about how Aidan really was a bit of jerk, but a jerk that you had to like as well. He was really the only guy that they had liked that had read for Aidan, that they hated everybody else, and because of that kept on to him throughout the casting process. So, he felt that they went out on limb for him, and felt very grateful for that.



He answered that he memorized his lines to have an overall feel of where the character was going, but that some stuff was ad-libbed as well. He talked of how the coffee scene was pretty much word for word, but slight ad-libbing was done, but not much.

He mentioned what he was up to now, which is painting, and script writing as of recently. He wants to tell a story about Mississippi, and paint it in an authentic light since movies rarely gets it right. (We, all Mississippians, tend to agree with this because it's true, unfortunately.)

He was asked about future acting projects, but he couldn't really comment on it, but that there have been people in touch with him for parts now that they've seen him in Remember Me.



Throughout the whole thing, he was lively and joking. He'd make us laugh, and provided some insight as to what being an actor was like. He showed us who Tate was, and that he didn't really take himself too seriously and have an elitist attitude about his job. He'd ramble, and then laugh and joke about it. If you asked a question, he'd direct the answer back at you; and he took time to really give you as detailed of an answer to your question that he could, which showed he listened to it in the first place.

Afterward, he took more pictures and talked to more people. I, as well, got to talk to him again, and it's very easy to tell that he's just a normal, easy going, unassuming guy. He more than likely probably thinks, "I'm just a guy from a small town in Mississippi, and I can't believe people actually wanted to see me in a movie."

He's humble, but it was easy to tell that he felt very honored to have been in the movie, and to have the screening for him done as well. I have a feeling that all of the people (crew, producers, director, and actors), involved in the movie feel as honored as he does as to have had a part in Remember Me as well, after having met him gotten a peek into what the process of making it was like.

What a wonderful expereince for everybody who got a chance to attend that event! And we here will alwayas be big fans of Tate's and will look forward to finding out what he is up to in the future!

The studio wanted a household name.

Allen Coulter, director of the new movie Remember Me, preferred the not-yet-famous actor from Madison, 30-year-old Tate Ellington.
"They were going to start filming in just a few days," recalls Ellington, a 2001 Ole Miss graduate. "So Allen called me in for a sit-down. He wanted me to give him my take on the character I would be playing, to tell him what this person was like, inside and out."

Forty-five minutes later, Coulter - best known for directing and producing 21 episodes of the HBO series The Sopranos - told Ellington: "I'm sold. And I'll make sure Summit (Entertainment) goes along with it."

Remember Me Connections....Taking Chance on HBO

Another film with a strong Remember Me connection is going to be shown on HBO on Wednesday November, 11th at 8:30 PM EST.

Taking Chance is based on real-life events. Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, a volunteer military escort officer, accompanies the body of 19-year-old Marine Chance Phelps back to his hometown of Dubois, Wyoming. It's a poignant, emotional journey which accurately portrays the care and protocol given to our nation's fallen heroes.

Remember Me's original music composer Marcelo Zarvos also wrote the score for this film. He received an Emmy nomination for his work. Tate Ellington appears in this film as A.V. Scott and Ruby Jerins plays the role of Olivia Strobl.

Lena Olin – Actor (Swedish). She is portraying Tyler’s mother Diane Hirsch. She studied acting at Sweden’s National Academy of Dramatic Arts. Best known role – Irina Derevko on ABC’s Alias. Chris Cooper – Actor (American). He is portraying police sergeant and Ally’s father Neil Craig. He began acting in the local Kansas City theater, the Barn Players; he was formally educated at the University of Missouri’s school of drama. Best Known Role – Col. Frank Fitts USMC in American Beauty (1999). Chris won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his role as John Larouche in Adaptation (2002).


Tate Ellington – Actor (American). He is portraying Tyler’s best friend Aidan. Best Known Role – Oliver Hunt in the Elephant King (2006).



Ruby Jerins – Actor (American). She is portraying Tyler’s little sister Caroline Hawkins. Best Known Role – Grace Peyton on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie.

Cast Spotlight Tate Ellington Part 2

Back in June when Remember Me first started filming, I wrote a spotlight on Tate which detailed some of his work to date. But reading about roles doesn't really give one a feel about an actor. Wondering what we might expect from Tate, I searched through the internet and came upon a couple of clips and a trailer that featured Tate in his role of Oliver in The Elephant King.

Oliver is described by viewers of the film as a quiet, retiring, semi-depressed man child who has been sent to Thailand by his parents to bring home his wayward brother. His performance was described as "absolutely amazing, leaving a memorable impression that makes you want to see him in more films in the future."

So take a look and get a little taste of what Tate can bring to the screen.
