Why does the thief shoot Ally's Mom?

Because he is evil and a coward. He killed an innocent woman only because she was looking at him, facing him but it was just a second, she had no intention to confront him or something similar. Ally`s mother is a brave woman and in these few minutes in the film we can understand why her presence is so important in the lives of Neil and Ally. Martha Plimpton did a great job, her interpretation is remarkable.

My first impression was that he thought or realized she was trying to remember his face so she could identify him to the police.

I've always wondered why Martha Plimpton wasn't listed in the credits. Was that at her request? I've been a fan of hers since she was a teenager and was glad to see that she's continuing to act.

I had two thoughts why the punk shot and killed Ally's Mom because he was afraid she might remember his face as she did look at him when he was leaving on the train..the other was because this creep has no sensibility of the value of life or how her death would impact the little girl she was trying to protect when they were robbing her. Martha Plimpton was terrific playing with Ally and then trying to shield her from the creeps.

Yes, it is hard to think of his act as anything but evil or cowardly. I have trouble with the theory that he thinks she will remember his face. After all, before they were on the subway she had lots of time to see him. I think it was just that she stared at him and he, perhaps, felt accused and just wanted to remove that judgement. He did not want any shred of his conscience to bug him and her stare reminded him what a low-life he was. So, get rid of the accusation. Ironically, if he has a conscience, and I will not discount that, it would plague him, not so much on the theft, but on his far greater crime of killing Ally's Mom.

I agree that Martha Plimpton was really good in this little scene.

Because she's a cop's wife and her instinct told her to study his face.

Anyone see her image at the end, when Ally's on the train and the lights are flashing as the scenery goes by, if you look at it, she sees the outline of her Mom.

Gives me chills.

I believe Martha Plimpton requested that her name not be included in the credits because she felt her role was more of a cameo appearance.

I think she was studying his face so she could remember him and report him later to the police, and he realized that.

She was studying his face for the police report but also she's a mom and her eyes were "parenting" him, scolding him.

Martha Plimpton gave an excellent performance and I am concerned whether the uproar over the movie's 9/11 theme led to her decision. Unlike many of the international cast she was born in NYC.

Aussiegirl...I think you have something--"staring at his face in complete abject fear...not really seeing him...just frozen in time"--I go with this more than the memorizing his face for the police theory actually. I've not anything more to add.

I found movie to be meaningful in the way that everyone came together with a true understanding. The cast did a terrific job and also wondered why Martha Plimpton was not added to the credits but learned through reading that she may have requested not to be.
