For me, RM reminded me that life is short, and we should live each day as if it will be our last, making sure the most important people in our lives know that we love them, even during the bad, sad, or angry times. Lots of young people don't realize how important this is unless or until they've experienced the loss of a loved one. RM also shocked me into realizing for the first time what 9/11 really meant. Until I saw this movie, I was somewhat detached from the event and didn't understand that those were real people who died and left thousands of grieving survivors behind. All the actors in this beautiful movie did such a great job of portraying their characters, I almost feel they're real people when I watch it, and I feel the loss of Tyler as if he were an actual person. The movie haunts me. . .I watch it and I cry; I listen to the score and I cry; I think about the movie and I cry. But the tears are cathartic, as I feel I didn't process the event as I should have when 9/11 happened. People have to grieve their losses sooner or later, oherwise, that grief is going to remain an unhealed wound that will come back sooner or later.
There's many messages in RM... but the one which stands out for me personally, would be this : to love, love and love again, as much as you can, and tell all your beloved ones around you that you love them, every day, every moment.
Coulter was adamant that the film not be preachy. In the podcast he did with Will, Nick and Rob, when talking about what Ally had learned by the end he talked about maturing and acceptance but: "Not a lesson! Not a lesson. I wouldn’t make a film that.. I mean, I would run from a film that I thought taught a lesson."
I think they succeeded. Yes it has a message, and probably more than one. But it has done so with a reality and eloquence and subtlty which escapes life lessons.
For me RM? Love your family and made them sure you love them. We can't love only by controlling, saying rules... we must say that we love them, and need hug them, need kiss them. And must say, RM has another message for me: along the critics, I never thought there can be so many hatred toward a young actor and because of it a good film can't get the appreciation what it deserves. So the world of the madia is an ugly world.
Since the first time I saw this film I could not think about messages. I think Coulter is a minimalist director. Very direct, you see, you feel and that is it. You never forget. The way he directs the actors pleases me. Very economical, simple, you just have to look into their eyes and being carried away by the story. Emotion flows spontaneously. You think it is real life but it is not. It is the magic of the art. It is pure and very good cinema.
Lais, I love what you've said about Coulter's directing. That's exactly it. I never thought of it that way but when I read your words, I agree completely. I think people somehow make their own messages about it, apart from the tag line, I mean. But, because of the manner in which it was written, directed and acted, the one feels so much spontaneously, as you said, and the messages come from within you, and you never feel as if you've been preached at. Know what I mean?
Yes, sure. You are right, that is why I love the way that Coulter made this film, how he has been doing all his work until now. For him there are no heroes and villains, there are only people living their lives the way they think it must be. Maybe it is what Tyler could have written in his journal later on that day, that finally he had discovered that Charles, Michael and himself are just human beings.
P.S. Jesse, I wrote a little comment about your article: Remember Me's Tag Line - "Live in the Moments"
Such interesting comments about Coulter, Lais. It's the humanity, not the big villians and heroes, just the simple humanity of good people trying to figure it all out and searching for love.
Thanks, about the comment. I'll check it out now. I have to apologize to you about this stupid comments business. I've become a little 'comment-whore' and I'm ashamed of this. But I guess the thoughts of our core group, we who discussed wildly and profoundly in all those DVD countdown quotes, remember. Their opinions are really valuable to me. Mea Culpa. Hope you had a good New Year!

@Jessegirl
I was so excited that I forgot to write that my comment above was an answer to you. Sorry.
