It's kind of ironic that Tyler is so fiercely protective of Caroline, but he lacks the inner strength to have much self-worth. He is strong enough to defend her and not himself from situations that go wrong.
What I love about Tyler and Caroline is that she accepts him 100% as is and he doesn't pretend with her. He actually becomes a better person, a more whole person when he's around her. His anger seems to morph into a quiet saddness.
But what I like is that he still smokes around her. He still speaks his mind because Tyler knows the hardships of youth and while he is very protective of her, he doesn't seem to condescend to her. He talks to her like she's a peer, which for someone like Caroline, is something she needs.
Caroline and Tyler form a great pair . Their relationship is based in mutual confidence, caress, cumplicity. Tyler is the father figure, to Caroline. He takes care of her, he takes her to school everyday, he is always by her side. Despite all his problems and even being so young he is very responsible and concerned about his little sister, which shows his good nature, his great sensibility. He is not selfish, he loves to help people, especially the ones he loves most ( Caroline, Diane, Ally, Aidan). I love the way how Tyler and Caroline interact all the time, they seem to live in a world apart, they are so delicate with one another. This scene in what she tells him about the exposition, is beautiful. Their naturality, their smiles. Rob and Ruby are amazing together, have good chemistry. They moved me so much. They still move me.
@LTavares - Yes, that's exactly how I feel :"I love the way how Tyler and Caroline interact all the time, they seem to live in a world apart". They are in their own world, and interacting almost like peers. That was the feeling I got when you see them sitting on the Alice in Wonderland statue - here they are, living in their own world, joined by common love and grief and by the overshadowing memory of their dead brother. Sometimes I thought Caroline could be the elder sister, she's so mature... as when she says" I'll make Mum behave" (so that her mother won't cry at Tyler's birthday, remembering Michael). And Tyler answers "as if that were possible" and they look at each other - they understand each other so perfectly. You can't see their difference in age at that particular moment. How extraordinary is that? But sometimes all of sudden Caroline becomes a little girl again. I really love their natural chemistry - I love how he protects her, always thinks of her, takes time to be with her and listens to her as to another grown-up, never talking her down.
Yeah, all of us see that loving relationship between these two. Every scene with Rob and Ruby is so heart-warming and genuine. You've all said what I would've myself. Not much to add right now. Hard to pick out a favourite scene, but I loved when he picked her up at school and gave her the book, his face all beaten up. Their dialogue while they walked was so beautiful. And when Rob speaks 'French', sorta...mmm...the man has a voice...(Rum, I know he mutilated French but still, like honey.) I so wished I'd had that relationship.
Heidi...He doesn't feel worthy enough to defend himself, don't you think? (I think Karma talked about this in another post.)
@jessegirl - He doesn't mutilate French so much, it's OK! He has an accent sure, it's a bit difficult for him with our French special "r", but curiously enough he doesn't sound at all like an Englishman with a terrible French accent. You can tell he's a foreigner trying to speak French, but it's hard to place his accent. I heard him speaking a bit French in interviews and he's doing it even better in real life. I think he also said somewhere he had learnt French in school. I find it funny however that French viewers did not seem to understand this scene or why he was speaking French all of sudden. I thought it was implied that maybe Caroline had a Frecnh class with this teacher called "Mademoiselle Fleischmann" and that Tyler was trying what French he knew to make her laugh. But I'm not so sure now. People in theater laugh good-naturedly when he speaks French but they clearly don't get why he is doing it. Any idea? I need help here. Merci !!
Rum: My take is that he adopted this silly French accent (pretty sure he KNEW it wasn't a great accent) to make her laugh about a sitation what was difficult for her.
I think he does it because he doesn't want Caroline to be sad, so he does something to distract her and something that shows her how ridiculous a lot of stuff is in life. We can all get bogged down by the Mademoiselle Fleischmanns and their snapping fingers, but the trick is to see how very small that piece or moment is and move away from it.
That's what Tyler is doing. And it worked, for Caroline and for me. It lightened the moment, it lightened the mood.
Rum, 'karma' explained it perfectly [*waves*]. That's exactly why he did it, and the French was because it was in French class, that's all. Nothing more. No big deal.
@Karma thanks! I like your explanation of the Mademoiselles Fleschmanns of this world... it's weird though that the French did not really understand the scene. There's one small thing they don't understand at all, it's a silly detail really, it's the "French toast" thing which keeps popping up throughout the film. It's just that when it's translated the allusion to French disappears (we call it "pain perdu", literally "wasted bread"). Oh - and by the way do Americans eat a lot of French toast or what ? That's another cultural mystery for me... sorry, tonight I'm not into deep analytical stuff!
Rum...I'm not sure of the origin of 'French toast' but it is a delicious way of using bread up, with eggs, milk, a little vanilla. After fried, you put maple syrup and butter on it. It is a dieter's nightmare, or heaven, depending on how one wants to look at it. But in America it's a real breakfast/brunch treat. I don't know, maybe Will Fetters likes it.
As far as Tyler using it in this scene, all he's doing is thinking of anything 'french' at the moment and sticking it in for Caroline to laugh at. I don't think it had any meaning other than it popped into Tyler's head at the moment. It could just as easily have been 'French braid' or 'French fries'. I think.
@jessegirl ! Thanks! Futile French toast digression I suppose... sounds yummy though. Remember Me has also its share of good laughs and lots of light moments, so I guess nobody wil be mad at me for asking :)).

I love their relationship and Caroline is very much like Tyler in many ways, downplaying her obvious gifts.
