I love our introduction to Aiden. To me, Aiden is such a front. He acts, talks, and tries to be like all the other 21 year old men out there. We can see that HE didn't have a girl sleep in his bed, Tyler did. We can see in the bar/club scene that the bartender who he said WANTED them to be there, didn't want them and that the Miami girls were much more interested in Tyler than Aiden.

If we talk about inauthenticity, we need to talk about Aiden. We know nothing of his past/family/etc. But we see him interacting with Tyler's family as if they were his own. I love that. I have tons of theories and could write several stories about it, but I'll refrain from doing so here.

But it's clear to me that Aiden, like most boys his age, has NO CLUE who they are. But it's unlike Tyler. I think Tyler KNOWS who he is, but is "undecided" about if that's who he wants to be. Aiden is not very self-aware, whereas Tyler is incredibly self-aware.

I love the lightness that Aiden brings to Tyler's life, not letting his friend go head first into the darkness that surrounds him. I love that he goes to Ally to plead for Tyler when Tyler won't even do it for himself.

Most of all, I love this relationship that Tyler and Aiden have. It needs no explanation because it just works. I think friendship between males has always fascinated me, I don't know why. This relationship is more than friendship, though, it's a brotherhood.

We don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if Aiden is a friend from childhood, meaning he was around when Tyler found Micheal. I like to think that it was Aiden that Tyler turned to. They seem to have a very well rehearsed, familiar relationship.

Hope that made sense.

I love this scene for many reasons...but the most important one is that we get our first glimpse into the world of Aiden. In many ways he's even more lost than Tyler. He's not applying himself, he has no direction (even though he says he wants to graduate) and life, it seems to Aiden, is a social event....responsibility gets in the way. In many ways, it's almost like Aiden tries to be like Tyler but doesn't quite pull it off.

They're really two peas in a pod; both meandering aimlessly but for different reasons. Aiden's may be maturity...maybe not. It's never really revealed to us. His issues are revealed to us through scenes like this and the bar with the bartender, the girls in the alley and the 'whole lotta ugly' at the party. There is one vast difference.... Aiden doesn't take life too seriously while Tyler takes everything seriously, even if without direction.

I would love to know how they met. I'm not necessarily thinking childhood friends because I don't see Aiden growing up with the privileges that Tyler probably enjoyed. I'm not even sure Tyler has confided that much in Aiden about Michael. I don't know why but I think it takes a lot for Tyler to let someone in....he resists telling Allie and we don't find out that he's the one who found his brother until the boardroom. I'm not sure guys would talk about that kind of stuff like we would....just not sure.

@soozy I think Aiden knows more about Michael than we might think. Tyler has placed pictures of his dead brother in their living room, not just his room, but in communal living space.

I know a lot of guys who share trauma like that, they might not get all weepy about it like girls might, but they do confide. My husband's friends know about some of his own issues, even if they don't "talk" about it much, it's a comfort to him that they know.

As far as the privileges, he might not come from a priviledged life, however, they could have met at a park, at karate class, at a diner and connected instantly.

But that's the fun of a character like Aiden, we're not given much to go on and so we can supply our own thoughts and bring our own interpretations into it.

But yes, they are meandering aimlessly together, I love it.

karma and soozy...see you've gotten things off to a rollicking start! Yeah.

Good old Aiden, meandering aimlessly, always ready for a party, drinking, levity, social interaction. Speaking and behaving in that cavalier sexist manner so many guys his age do, for fun, no real ill-will intended but no real thought behind his words. The whole revenge plan against Ally was part of this callous and ill-considered aspect of him.

I think the 'toothbrush girl', his inspiration for the SLUT kit [more gratuituous sexism], and Megan the bartender, were a bit of envy of Tyler, who, it has to be said, despite his broody behaviour, attracted the girls. It was Tyler Megan wanted to see, that's what I think. [And he didn't want to get involved with her; that was obvious by Tyler's facial expression after Aiden told him in the bookshop. -Very expressive face.] Aiden feels this male camaraderie with Tyler, and the supposed attitude they share towards women. He wants one-night stands, because he wouldn't know how to have a relationship with a woman any more than Tyler would, but for different reasons. He's the quintessential immature male. [Re: toothpaste girl...Aiden has no room in that upper bunk for a teddy bear, much less a girl!]

His speeches to Tyler: in the jail, in the bookstore, are his attempts at 'intervention' but negated by his own aimlessness. But he intervenes for Tyler, being his advocate when he goes to Ally at her home and faces Neil as well, and that took guts. By the end of the movie Aiden has begun to grow up.

We can make up fictional backstories for him, and, no, I don't think he would have grown up with Tyler, but doing so is just fun. He is the only 'pure' one in the story. I mean, the only one whose background, whose issues and family we don't know. All he does is relate to the others and their issues.

Tyler and Aidan are so funny together. They live together, Aidan frequents Tyler`s home, they go to the bars at night, they go to university, even in Tyler work Aidan appears (laughs). There are few moments in which Tyler seem relax and stays in peace with himself, besides Caroline, Ally and even Diane, it is Aidan who provides some of those moments. I only can imagine how important was the existence of Tyler in Aidan`s life. He was his best friend and maybe his only friend. Even in his fragility Tyler was the real strength in the lives of Caroline, Diane and Aidan.

P.S. Sorry but I need to talk, it is a shame that Remember Me, Rob and Emilie haven´t been nominated for the MTV movie awards. Rob is perfect as Tyler, Emilie is wonderful and Remember Me is one of the best films of 2010.

Sorry girls, I was distracted and I repeated my comment. I am JC also. Sorry again. (LOL)

I have to say I was terribly disappointed that this movie received no noms from MTV. I honestly liked this better than New Moon.....

Ok...I'll relent. Tyler and Aiden were probably closer than I realized otherwise I don't think Tyler would have been persuaded to meet Allie.

I loved the lighter moments that Aiden brought to this movie. Without his comedic relief, this movie would have been really heavy. This was just the beginning of his antics that left us rolling...

I love Aiden....did anyone see 'The Invention of Lying'? Tate Ellington had a bit part as a waiter. I think we'll see more of him...

@soozy

Unhappily I did not see "The Inventions of Lying" yet but instead of it I saw Tate in the episode "Infamy" of the TV series "The Good Wife". He was very different of Aidan, in a dramatic role. You are right, he is a very good actor, I love him too and we will see more of him, soon.

LTavares and soozy...MTV. Well, you know for me it's the big ones[Oscar and Bafta], but I know it won't get in those either. I think with MTV its what the huge fanbases determine. Last year it was Twilight and this year, well, not Remember Me. That fanbase for the saga didn't back RM, remember, so I didn't think it would be appreciated by MTV.

Yeah, man, big Happy Birthday to you, Robert!

Oh and Kat, thank you for the score. I had, after much agonizing with technology, figured out a way of getting it, but to have it here it fantastic. You look after us!

*Shrug* I don't know, I like supposing about Aiden's life.

If he met Tyler when they were 18 and first in college, they would have been friends for 3ish years, right?

Is that long enough forsuch a friendship to take hold that someone would permanently tattoo another guy's name on his shoulder? Micheal on Tyler I can see. Tyler on Aiden, I'm not quite sure.

We don't know their relationship, but we know that Aiden was perfectly comfortable calling Charles from a jail cell. Charles, who hasn't been an ACTIVE part of Tyler's life since he was 17 and maybe before. That to me denotes a level of past history.

He's also invited to a very private party inside the house of his mother where he danced very comfortably with Tyler's little sister.

I had roommates in college. I had friends that I'd known for a few years, they weren't invited inside my mother's home for a family gathering. And not one of them ever called my dad or mom for anything.

But maybe that's just me.

The big take away is that there was this guy named Tyler and he had a friend named Aiden and they accepted each other as is.

Awesome thoughts instntkarmagirl. I think youre right. It speaks volumes that Aiden felt comfortable callng Charles for bail & tattoing Tyler's name on his arm. Good catch.

karma...I always enjoy your take on things.
I really havent' analyzed Aiden and Tyler's relationship much (right here is the extent of it).

I wonder whether the Aiden's tattoo had more to do with Will Fetters, or Allen, finding a quick visual way to show that Tyler's death, and, more to the point, his life, impacted Aiden substantially. And, artistically, it would be part of that circular pattern these filmmakers seem to love so much. The symbol is the thing.

It's possible we are overthinking this and, as you say, leave it at 'there was this buy named Tyler and he had a friend...'

But you are right. Aiden felt very at home calling Charles, and Caroline wanted Aiden at Tyler's B-day party, and, in so many ways, it seems like they knew each other 'before' or they bonded hugely in college.
That being said, when I was in university I had the same experience you did. Those friends, no matter how close to me at the time, didn't frequent my house, etc. like Aiden obviously does. I think in university one is breaking away from home and often keeps the friends separate from family, not because one is ashamed of either, but just to have a life independent of the family.

I think, for the plot, Will needed to have Aiden more interwoven in the Hawkins' lives. We can speculate on the backstory--eg. Tyler knew him at high school or somewhere else, previously--but in the end it really doesn't matter.

Karma, jesse - I agree with both of you. Karma - I've always imagined Aidan to be a really close friend of Tyler and not just some roommate he needed to put up with to pay the rent. They go out together, Aidan knows Tyler's family, he's invited to their house, he spends holidays with them and he actually called Charles' office or someone else from the family to get them bailed out. I don't think he called Charles personally though (else why would Tyler have to tell his Dad it wasn't him who called him?). But that's just a detail.
On the other hand, jessegirl, I agree with you that Coulter and Fetters needed a quick, powerful visual clue to symbolize the loss and grief of Tyler's death in Aidan's life, and the tattoo was a very good device for that. Symbols are so important in this film.
I love it how we gather here and try to imagine the backstories. Ultimately, whether we are right or wrong and whether we will ever know if we are or not does not matter, it's sharing and exchanging together which really matters and speaks volumes of the power of this little film.
Oh and btw I wanted you to know that I've posted and translated into French (it's a bilingual English/French post) most of the comments of quote #43 on my own RM blog to give French viewers an idea of what we all share here. Kat kindly gave me the permission to do so. So ladies, your thoughts and ideas are going international, like the film. I've kept all the names anonymous though to respect your privacy, each commenter is only mentioned by the first letter of his or her nickname. I thought you might like to know and wanted to thank you all for contributing!

Great, Rum...I think we were on fire for #55 'Heart' quote and its twin #48 'drew you a picture' (to me these two go together); and # 45 'sins'. Or are the ones where I couldnt' keep my mouth shut? Oh well.

World, here we come!
Don't you all love that the score is here now?
xo

WhyIstheRumAlwaysGone said...

@jessegirl Yes the 55 and 48 quote were great but very long, and it would take me ages to have them translated. I think I might just include a link pointing to the comments and try to make a summary of all the ideas. I'm working on it:)). And yes, I love having the score here! In my country you simply can't buy it. It's only for sale on the USA itunes and Amazon sites and we're not allowed to buy the mp3 there for copyright reasons. So you have to find it.. in other ways. How stupid is that? People in my discussion forum have been desperately looking for the score - MP3, CD - for months and more than willing to pay for it, and it's not even for sale.
