Quote #57

You're kinda lost, aren't you? Taking a little vacation in coach before finding your way back to first class?

Neil Craig and Tyler are one of my favourite characters of RM, I love this scene, Neil and Tyler are emotionally similar .This scene is thrilling, the verbal and phisical confrontation of them is one of the best moments of Rob and Chris in the film. They are superb, it is like a duel without winners. It is an excellent, exhaustive and exciting performance to a great actor like Cooper and to a talented and skilled actor like Rob. I love them very much. Brilliant!

his scene was one of my favorites too. I just love Chris Cooper and thought that Rob held his own with him quite well.

Yes, this scene was gripping. You could feel Neil's scorn and quiet control of himself - till Tyler provoked him into beating him up - and Tyler's pain and sorrow as he realized that the beautiful story he had been living with Ally was about to be shattered to pieces. There's a moment when Tyler looks extremely vulnerable, you could almost believe he's about to cry, when he confesses that Ally "doesn't know". You can also see all of his pain as he sees that Neil has been reading his diaries and when he mentions that Michale died by hanging. Everything is in the wounded expression of his eyes. It was great.

Oh man the wounded expression in his eyes.
Anyone who says that Robert can't act after seeing this film is deluded.

Maybe not on point, but everyone compares him with James Dean, as if Rob is a poor imitation. First of all, all artists learn from their predecessors. Second, it's possible that if you compare Robert's acting in this film with Dean's, Jimmy might come out the lesser one. It's just because he's such a legend and one doesn't touch a legend, that he's always being referenced that way. It's possible that in Robert we have someone potentially better than Dean, Brando, etc.

Robert does the 'wounding' really well. I don't know where he draws that power to reveal it so very well but he does. Neil reading his diaries. But if Neil read them, did he just home in on Ally's name and skip the parts where Tyler is feeling morally reprehensible, because his own guilt must have been there too?

Yes, Rum, another gripping scene.

Robert really shows a lot of emotion in this scene, as well as in the entire movie. After seeing this, I went back and watched Rob's older movies again, and I realized that Robert is really good at displaying emotions. "How to Be" and "Little Ashes" are really good examples of this, in my opinion. He's really good with facial expressions, and that's a really important part of acting, so I think he's amazing, and will only get better with time.

I've been reading things on here about how Tyler and Neil Craig are alike, so today I was thinking, and I came up with a theory about something in this scene. Tyler says something to Neil like "I know you've got nothing to lose" and "You gave up the one person who gave a shit". In a way, it almost seems like he's saying it to both Neil and himself. I mean, at that point I think he knows that him and Ally are pretty much over, because her father found out, so Tyler really has nothing left to lose because he basically just lost Ally, he already lost his brother, and he isn't close with his father. And Tyler gave up "the one person who gave a shit" (Ally) at that moment, too. So that would be another way they're alike....just a thought...

Yeah, maybe there are similarities there, but Tyler has a lot to lose, his Mom, and Caroline. It is true though that Tyler has lost a lot. I'm just saying, he's not lost everything.

It's on another post, but, although I think Tyler is very aware he's lost Ally, and is very sad because of it, he is into provoking Neil here, so that he gets the beating he feels he deserves.
