This is such a great scene but then, haven't I said that about every quote so far?

This line...Caroline is confiding in Tyler. They're establishing their closeness with this scene. It's also interesting to me that Tyler understands. We see him space out with his journal on many occasions. It's so touching to see him pick up on her distress and try to make her laugh....we need to get to surgery, the terrible threshing accident and mademoiselle Fleschman....

Caroline reveals a part of herself that will be a pivotal underlying issue for her through the entire movie. This is a very important line for that reason...Love Ruby! Amazing actress....

Soozy, I agree with all of this.
I love his understanding and I have to wonder with all three kids being creative, if this zoning out is a family trait. It could be manifest in Caroline because it's evident that there are some emotional traumas in her life (losing a brother by his own hand at such a young age, the emotional unavailability of her father, the emotional wounds of her mother).

I love like the love in Tyler's eyes when he's around her. She really is his connection to humanity.

And I love how he makes her laugh. It's what good older brothers do.

I can feel both of their pain and loneliness here. Like the other other person in the world who understands them is each other.

Triple love Ruby! They make this brother-sister relationship look so natural and the connection they have is special due to what they both had to go through. I like how these more vulnerable moments are thrown in because then we get to see a different glimpse of the characters, how they pull through these difficulties together.

I absolutely love Tyler's relationship with his sister. It's nice to see the sweet, caring side of Tyler. His relationship with his father is very strained, whereas Caroline and Tyler's relationship is just so natural. It just goes to show that how Tyler is with his dad isn't necessarily who he is as a person. With his dad, he seems selfish and uncaring, but in the scenes with Caroline, we see a totally different side of him. It's easy to see that he really cares about his sister. I love the school scene, when he throws the fire hydrant and pushes the girl's desk. It shows that he's willing to stick up for his sister no matter what the consequences. I also love when he's reading to her after those girls cut her hair. Ruby and Rob really did seem like brother and sister in this film, they're both amazing actors!

I particularly love how they talk together as if they were more or less the same age. Tyler treats Caroline like a grown-up and an equal.

Hello, everybody!
There’s nothing controversial here and you’ve all said pretty much what I would say. I so admire how the filmmakers have been able to show so much in every scene, to establish the various relationships. Soozy, he does understand her zoning out, doesn’t he, because he does it too. And Karma, perhaps the artistic traits in the three siblings are part of this, yeah. And Heidi, --‘how they pull through these difficulties together’—yes, I think they give each other strength. Yes, Tyler is the big brother, the hero, the champion, but Caroline’s needs give him a chance to reveal that side of himself. He nurtures her, lightens her spirits, sticks up for her, always. This is a constant. And of course she has his back (the phone call at the beginning). So they look out for each other.
I’m so envious. I want him for a big brother. Sorry, couldn’t help it.

Tyler seems to have a wall up when it comes to other members of his family. With Caroline, he is honest...real. He's her protector and she takes care of him too.....ie, the wakeup call. She does seem mature for her age and yet in somethings Tyler seems immature. They meet somewhere in the middle...

I always wanted to have an older brother. I became jealous of Caroline for having Tyler. He is her father figure, her confident, she can count on him for everything, to protect her, to take care of her, to encourage. however, she worries about him too, takes care of him. The two have a complicity, a fraternal affection. Tyler and Caroline are both fragile and sensitive and they understand one another in a way very delicate.
It is so good to her to have someone with whom she can share the things she feels, no need to be alone in her own world. She has Tyler. Tyler will continue to live through Caroline. I look at her and I see Tyler.
I was touched by the way that Rob and Ruby interact with one another. They are spontaneous, natural, affectionate. The relationship of their characters is the one which most humanizes the character of Tyler, especially before the arrival of Ally in his life. It is through the eyes of these two women that we managed to realize the extent of his suffering.

Hm...I posted but it isn't here....

There seems to be a wall that Tyler puts up when dealing with his parents. His relationship with caroline is so honest....genuine. He is her protector and yet she takes care of him too....ie, the morning wake up call. Love these two together....
