This sums up Tylers struggles in a nutshell. "You think you know me, but you don't." That's how he feels about everyone in his life. They see what he gives them, which isn't much. He saves his true self only for Micheal, sometimes Caroline, and now Ally.

I identify so much with this side of Tyler, this rebellious, "YOU DON'T KNOW ME" mantra...this I am more than what you think I am.

And he needs to believe that he is, because without his belief that he is different than how the world sees him, he'd go the route of his brother.

There is so much strength within Tyler that he just doesn't see.

Why do I feel like he's speaking to us here?

Besides what IKG said, which I agree with...he's addressing the information that Neil has collected....the one dimensional Tyler, the preconceived assumptions that he's made based on basic facts and his arrest. I also think he's addressing Neil's statement about discarding his daughter. Neil was wrong about him on so many levels, tainted by his own grief and pessimism.

Loved how this confrontation played out. Both actors were brilliant...

Just a note guys...going on vaca tomorrow to LA. Going to see Rob at the convention, Leno and planning a trek to the set of his new film so I won't be commenting regularly. I'll be back the day the DVD releases....see you then.

These two men have so much in common. They both lived tragedies; they are very protective to someone; they are introspective, apathetic for some things but they can put out their emotions any time, it can be in a violent way or not but always very strong. Neil blames himself for not have been capable to protect his wife, he is a cop and that is why he suffers and now he protects Ally in excess. Tyler is younger, he found out the dead body of his brother, he is traumatized, I think he learnt to handle with all this situation pratically alone, his suffering is not so different from Neil`s. He blames himself for not have arrived in time to save Michael, he blames Michael too for leaving him alone, he blames his father for many other things. He is very protective to Caroline, his sister and she assumes the role of his mother and friend many times.
It is interesting how Tyler and Neil are so linked with two girls with big difference of ages of them, like father and daughter. Observing their relationships is like seeing the past and the future of them (Tyler/Caroline and Neil/Ally ).
Ally becomes the connection between the two men. In this specific scene, Tyler catches Neil reading his journal and tells him "you think you know me but no." I was thinking to myself if Neil really doesn`t know Tyler.
Chris Cooper makes a perfect interpretation of Neil and thereby further increases the level of the performance of Rob as Tyler. When they are together in scene, especially in this, I see the confront of two lost men who don`t believe deserve to be happy and that do not know what to make of their lives.

P.S. Soozy, you are a lucky girl. Have a nice trip.

Ltavares, wow great idea to compare the father/daughter relationship between Tyler/Caroline and Neil/Ally
Please can I quote you and re-use this idea to make a short post on my blog?

Soozy...Have a great time, and tell us all about it when you return. We’ll miss you.
LTavares...Very good analysis, as Rum said, about the parallels between the two men’s relationships with the females.

No, Craig couldn’t possibly know Tyler just from the fight and the journal, although I still wonder how much of it he read. How much time would he have had? You couldn’t just skim something like that, you’d have to delve in to do the author justice. Obviously Craig was scanning it to find things about Ally and probably never got beyond that. And then Tyler plays into Craig’s anger, because this man is just itching for a fight. But Tyler doesn’t really fight; as we’ve discussed before, Tyler sees this as an opportunity to be punished.
It’s ironic that they are alike in many ways, think they know each other, but don’t. I mean, Tyler assumes he knows Craig: “You’ve got nothing..”.etc.
They are too embroiled in their respective inner battles to really look at each other objectively. Neither knows the other.
