I love how awkward and miserable he sounds. He can't say "i love you - please come back" but I think that's what he's thinking. Or is is it me just being sentimental? Anyway, I think that if I were in Ally's shoes, I wouldn't know what to do or think in such a sitaution: go on being angry with Tyler for lying to her? or grab him and hug him? Hmmm... We don't know what she answers, I wonder if there will be something in the DVD commentary about that scene.
"I know you're not here for me ,but I just wanted you to know I think you're incredible" ~Tyler
@Rum
You are not the only one being sentimental ( lol ) I only have a little different perspective of you. Men are unbelievable and I think that is the reason I love them. That is why I love Tyler. He is incredible too. I think that he said "I know you`re not here for me..." but deep in his soul, he wanted her to say: " Oh Tyler this is not the whole truth, I am here because I miss you too, I forgive you , I can`t live without you, please." and then she puts her head in his shoulder, they look at each other and kiss. Tyler is not a man to give always the first step, even more when he feels guilty about something and that is his case. Rob and Emilie, great partnership!
I’m not sure, but I thought he said “amazing”, not “incredible”. Not that it matters. (I need the DVD to check these things!...lol) Rum...I do think he wants to say that but is too miserable to go for it. I mean, she’s THERE for heaven’s sake, man, go for it! I feel like shaking him, then, er, grabbing him. It’s really hard to give this guy a wakeup call. And, Rum, I don’t remember her saying much of anything. In a way it was a scene in which the light—you always love what light does—makes them glow a little, surrounded by all that dark, navy colour behind them, but they both seem in murky waters here, each wishing the other one would make the declaration. Tyler wants Ally to say she’s forgiven him (but remember, he hasn’t asked for it, and in my book, that has to happen first). I mean, even if someone really wants to forgive you, you must ask first; it’s a ‘forgiveness’ rule or something. And I think that’s what Ally is waiting for, frankly, because that’s the missing dialogue puzzle piece here. LTavares, I love Tyler, you know I do, but here he wimps out. Why should Ally say all that you’d have her say, plus the ‘please’? He needs to say it. It’s his chance to win her back. She’s already come half way just by showing up to support Caroline and the family. I think he feels scared and shaken by the hair-cutting incident, knowing it needs fixing and he’d better get on it. So that’s on his mind. And we know he’s miserable without Ally—in the scene when he and Aiden were in the theatre watching ‘American Pie’, Tyler was in agony. (Rob was fantastic in that little scene; his facial expressions were so absolutely perfect yet original. He tried to laugh with Aiden but was ready to heave instead. He was almost physically ill with suffering. It hurt to watch him there. Dead-on acting.) I think Tyler does want Ally to guide this conversation, to help him out, as you think. I think he’s at the point where he needs rescuing because he’s tapped out. Maybe, without words—because it’s too soon and the forgiveness exchange needs to be done right—she can cuddle up, wrap her arms around him, just give him physical comfort, not sex, so that he knows she loves him. The forgiveness part can come later; the thoughts are there even if the words aren’t spoken aloud. Instead, he can’t say the words, only the quoted ones. And she knows she needs the right words. Somehow the unspoken comes between their physical reconciliation at this point. But it’s just on the horizon.
I know you're not here for me ,but I just wanted you to know I think you're incredible" ~Tyler
When Tyler sees Aiden and Ally go into his Mother’s house and hug her I think he is in shock she showed up. He is embarrassed and completely taken back because he knows that Aiden probably told her the truth that the whole idea about dating her was not his idea,
I think he realizes that Ally is indeed someone special and someone he has fallen in love with but hasn’t admitted it to himself much less her. He knows that Ally is very aware of his love for his sister Carolyn and she has come to be supportive to his family.
When he goes outside to sit on the stoop and she joins him he tells her, he knows she is not there for him but thinks she’s incredible, is probably the closes thing he can say to let her know he thinks highly of her but just can’t tell her he loves her because I think he is emotionally void of expressing his true feeling and it could be because of his brother’s suicide and the anger he has had with his father. I think the shock over the trauma his sister has gone through…his turmoil of Ally leaving him has made him realize he really loves her.
I thought dang it why didn’t he hold her in his arms and tell her he was sorry and tell her he loved her…Nope! It wasn’t to be that way and it killed me-- but in reality I think Tyler knew that Ally being there was a step in giving him the strength to tell her he does love her and he wasn’t going to let her go.

I like that line, I think Tyler actually voiced the proper words in a way. I wouldn't have liked to hear him say he loves her, that was not the right moment. And besides "I think you're amazing" (I'm pretty sure it's not "incredible") is just so powerful in its meaning: when a boy says to a girl she's amazing, well it's in the bag! And as a woman, Ally knows it, that's why she has that hidden little 'smile', that satisfaction: she's now sure she wasn't just a bet or a way of revenge; Tyler has definitely fallen for her. That is why I wasn't expected for a kiss or a hug, or everything. This was perfect: it was the first step to their reconciliation.
Sarah, I think you’re right about it being the first step to their reconciliation. And I know I’m right about the forgiveness thing. The thing is, this movie doesn’t pull punches, or grant cuddle wishes either. It’s too real. Too authentic. I guess many of us wanted that physical gesture so much, craved it, even though the characters weren’t ready.
